It is not surprising that there is a fair amount of misinformation out there about home insulation. After all, it isn’t like they taught you about this topic in school. Instead, you learned whatever you know by listening to others who may or may not be as well informed as they think they are. Here are a few of the top myths that your insulation contractor can set straight for you:
- Myth #1 – Florida homes don’t need as much insulation because it isn’t cold. The reality is that insulation isn’t just to keep cold air outdoors, but keep cold, air-conditioned air indoors. You’ll enjoy far lower cooling costs if you let your insulation contractor get your home to a proper R-value.
- Myth #2 – Insulating your home is so costly that you’ll never recoup the cost. The reality is that your home may be really close to having the efficiency you need, and the upgrade won’t be as costly as you might think. Regardless, at some point you will recoup the cost. Even if it were to take you a number of years to recoup, if you don’t do it you’ll continue paying higher utility bills for an entire lifetime. Proper insulation is also a marketing advantage, so you could enjoy a higher selling price if you put your home on the market.
- Myth #3 – There is no such thing as too much insulation and you can easily handle installing another layer or another type of insulation on your own. The reality is that more is not always better and could restrict air flow, leading to moisture issues and other problems. Improperly installed insulation can result in problems that you really don’t want to experience. Leave both the determination about whether more insulation is needed and the installation of it to a professional insulation contractor.
