The Department of Energy says that installing insulation in the areas shown in the diagram below can greatly improve your home’s comfort and energy efficiency.
One of the most affordable ways to make your home more comfortable throughout the year is to insulate the attic, including the access door or trap. Batting insulation products are made from flexible mineral fibers such as rock wool and fiberglass. They are available in widths suitable for standard spacing of attic or floor joists and wall studs.
If your attic has proper air sealing and sufficient batting insulation, but your home is still chilly and drafty in winter or too hot in summer, you probably need to insulate the exterior walls. Even though this may be more expensive, it will be worth the cost. If you’re planning to replace your siding, then consider adding insulation at the same time. Your budget and how you will use the insulation will determine which type you should choose.
Note: In a hot climate like Florida, consider roof or attic radiant barriers, foundation insulation or reflective insulation for new home construction. Talk to one of our contractors about these options. For more tips and info on home insulation, visit the Department of Energy’s website.
